WEEK 50 – SUNDAY MORNING, DECEMBER 10, 2017.

TOPIC: THE DIVINITY OF JESUS CHRIST

Main Text: John 14:5-11

Memory Verse: “Very Truly I tell you”, Jesus answered, “Before Abraham was born, I am!” - John 8:58

Introduction

Jesus Christ is God incarnate. This means that even though He is God, He took on the form of man and lived among us. This makes Him fully God and fully man. The focus of today’s study is to discuss the “God nature” of Christ, also known as His divinity. The doctrine of the divinity of Christ is so vital that the New Testament has many references to it. The conversation between Jesus Christ and His disciples as indicated in today’s passage, clearly brings out important lessons on the subject for our study.

Questions for Discussion

1. Which two disciples questioned Jesus in today’s reading? Verses 5, 8

2. Identify the aspects of Jesus’ answers which reveal His divinity? Verses 7, 9

3. How do you understand the statement, “Anyone who has seen me, has seen the Father” Verse 9

4. From today’s study, on what bases would you say Jesus is God?

5. How will you explain the divinity of Jesus to a friend who does not understand it?

Conclusion

The questions raised by Thomas and Philip, bring out important lessons about the divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ. He told Thomas that “If you really know Me, you will know My Father”, and to Philip, He said “Anyone who has seen Me has seen the Father”. By these answers, Jesus was pointed out to them that He is God. Today’s memory verse points out that when the Jews questioned Jesus about how He had knowledge of Abraham, He responded that “before Abraham was I am”. It should be noted that the name “I Am” is attributed to only God (Exo 3:14). Again, the Apostle Paul points out that even though Jesus was in the very nature God, He did not consider equality with God something to be grasped (Phil 2:6). Above all, Jesus Himself declared in John 10:30’ “I and My Father are one.” These and many more Scriptures prove that Jesus is God.

TOPIC: JESUS CHRIST, THE SAVIOUR OF THE WORLD

Main Text: Luke 19:1-10

Memory Verse: Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved. - Acts 4:12

Introduction

Salvation means to be delivered from sin and its consequences. Just as through Adam, sin and death entered the world, so also through Christ, eternal life has been made available to all who believe in Him. Fully aware of this truth, Peter told the rulers and religious leaders of Israel that “There is no other name under heaven given to humankind by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). Jesus’ encounter with Zacchaeus, the tax collector, provides a perfect example of His passion for the lost. As the Saviour of the world, the Lord used every opportunity to seek and save them.

Questions for Discussion

1. What was Zacchaeus’ challenge in attempting to see Jesus? Verse 3

2. How did he overcome this challenge? Verse 4

3. What was Jesus’ responds to Zacchaeus’ effort to see Him? Verses 5, 9

4. Discuss the statement, “For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost” Verse 10

5. Identify some challenges people face in coming to faith in Christ. How will you help them to overcome the challenges?

Conclusion

We read in the passage that Zacchaeus was a short man so he could not see Jesus because of the crowd. He therefore ran ahead of the crowd and climbed a sycamore-fig tree in order to see Jesus. Reaching the spot, Jesus stopped and requested to be with Zacchaeus, the tax collector. Since tax collectors were considered to be sinners, the crowd did not understand why Jesus could go to the house of a sinner. In response to this, Jesus revealed this important truth about Himself, “for the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost”. This is His core mandate as the Saviour of the world.
