TOPIC: PEACE ON EARTH

Main text: Luke 2:4-15

Introduction

Christmas is a season that is eagerly awaited by many people around the world. It comes with family re-unions, get-togethers, and corporate dinners, among others. However, the real reason for the season of Christmas is Jesus Christ. Christmas commemorates the birth of the Saviour of the world, Jesus Christ. Christians all over the world mark this day with joyous celebrations. In our memory verse, we learn that the birth of Jesus Christ has released peace on earth. Christmas is, therefore, a time of reconciliation, a season of friendship as well as an opportunity to tell others about Jesus Christ.

Questions for Discussion

1. Why did Joseph go to Bethlehem in Judea? Verses 4-5

2. What was the angel’s message to the shepherds? Verses 10-12

3. What was the message of the heavenly host? Verses 13-14

4. What does Christmas mean to you?

5. How can we be agents of peace and reconciliation to others?

Conclusion

The change in weather, the carols that fill the atmosphere, the gatherings and conventions are but a few of the characteristics of Christmas. As we have discussed, the true purpose of Christmas is to celebrate the birth of the only Saviour of humankind. Even angels could not hold their joy at the release of the greatest of all promises. The coming of Jesus fulfils the promise of God to liberate humanity from the bondage of sin. The greatest reconciliation agenda which began in Eden was culminated at Christmas. We must all therefore, reflect on the activities of the year as it draws to an end, and initiate the process of reconciliation where needed.
