THE CHURCH OF PENTECOST – 2018 BIBLE STUDY OUTLINE

WEEK 39 – SUNDAY MORNING, SEPTEMBER 30, 2018.

TOPIC: THE TENETS OF THE CHURCH – JUSTIFICATION

Review of Previous Week’s Lesson (5 Minutes)

a. What did you learn last week?

b. How did you apply it to your life?

Main Text: Romans 4:1-8

Memory Verse: Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. – Romans 5:1

Introduction

An important aspect of our conversion experience is Justification. To be justified means to be acquitted, pronounced ‘not guilty’ and declared righteous before the righteous God. Justification comes when one believes in the vicarious (done on behalf of another) death of Jesus Christ. When this happens, God credits the righteousness of Christ to the believer who then stands before God as if he has never sinned. Paul uses the example of Abraham to assert that this state is not acquired by works but by faith. Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness.

Questions for Discussion

1. What is Justification?

2. How does one get justified? Romans 5:1

3. Differentiate between justification by works and justification by faith. Romans 4:1-6

4. How is righteousness credited to the believer?

5. What lessons have you learnt from today’s study?

Conclusion

For the Jew, to be saved or accepted by God, one has to obey every minute detail of the Mosaic Law. The Jews therefore, had to work hard to obey all Jewish rules and regulations. Paul teaches that Abraham was justified in the sight of God by his faith in the promises of God, not by works. In the same way, God has given His Only Son to be crucified on a tree to atone for our sins. Whoever places his faith in the Son of God shall be justified.

TOPIC: THE TENETS OF THE CHURCH – REGENERATION

Review of Previous Week’s Lesson (5 Minutes)

a. What did you learn last week?

b. How did you apply it to your life?

Main Text: John 3:1-7

Memory Verse: In reply Jesus declared, ‘I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again. – John 3:3

Introduction

In His discourse with Nicodemus, Jesus talks about one of the foundational doctrines of the Christian faith: the New Birth or Regeneration. The Lord Jesus stated strongly that no one can enter the Kingdom of Heaven without the experience of the New Birth. The Bible teaches that humankind became separated from God at the fall. Therefore, in order to restore fellowship with God, the “dead human spirit” must be reborn or regenerated. Regeneration is the re-creation of spiritual life in the human heart or bringing to life the “dead human spirit” by the Spirit of God. Through this means, eternal life from God is imparted to the believer and he or she becomes a child of God. Thus, the new birth happens to only those who have repented of their sins, turned to God and believed in the Lord Jesus Christ alone for salvation.

Questions for Discussion

1. What did Jesus say to Nicodemus? Verse 3

2. What does it mean to be ‘born again’?

3. Why must a person be born again? Verse 3

4. How does one become a child of God? John 1:12

5. Repentance and Regeneration are necessary requirements for Salvation. Discuss.

Conclusion

The passage for today is about Nicodemus. With a hungry and thirsty heart, he came to Jesus for salvation, and Jesus who knew the condition of his heart met his spiritual needs. He told Nicodemus that to enter the kingdom of God a person must be born again. Bible narratives teach that the human spirit ‘died’ (was separated from God) when Adam fell. Sin then entered the human race and brought separation from a Holy God. To restore fellowship with God, the ‘dead human spirit’ needs to be recreated (born anew). To be born again one must repent of their sins, confess them, and trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour. When these are done the Spirit of God brings life to the “dead spirit”; that is regeneration. The human spirit then receives a new life from God.

TOPIC: CHILDREN’S MINISTRY WEEK – CHILDREN, A HERITAGE UNTO PARENTS

Review of Previous Week’s Lesson (5 Minutes)

a. What did you learn last week?

b. How did you apply it to your life?

Main Text: Exodus 13:5-14

Memory Verse: Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, The fruit of the womb is His reward. – Psalm 127:3 (NKJV)

Introduction

It is easier to mould and shape clay when it is wet than when it is dry. Children are like wet clay. The Church of Pentecost has a Children’s Ministry which trains children along biblical precepts of balanced growth; it includes lessons on Salvation, Worship and Obedience. In many parts of Africa, parents (including foster parents) do well to recognise children as a heritage from the LORD but fail to pass on to them the right kind of knowledge. Many children are warmly welcomed on the day they are born but are neglected later on to struggle in life. Some of them are denied the proper parental care they deserve. Today’s study should lead us to re-examine our roles as parents.

Questions for Discussion

1. What are the names of the lands the LORD promised to give Israel? Verse 5

2. How did God want the parents to inform their children concerning the Feast of Passover? Verse 14

3. How can we pass on the core values and practices of the Church to our children?

4. What is the importance of the Children’s Ministry in the Church?

5. What lessons have you learnt from today’s study?

Conclusion

The kind of doctrine that we feed children with will determine the sort of adults they will become. God clearly instructed the people of Israel to keep and pass on to their children how He wanted parents to relay vital information on ceremonies to their children. God, ahead of time, instructed Moses to tell parents to be ready with answers regarding the celebration of the Passover. He tasked the parents to give the children the right to knowing the things pertaining to the LORD of Hosts.

TOPIC: GUIDE YOUR CHILDREN TO KNOW GOD

Review of Previous Lesson (5 Minutes)

a. What did you learn from the previous lesson?

b. How did you apply it to your life?

Main Text: 1 Samuel 3:1-11

Memory Verse: Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord: The word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to him. – 1 Samuel 3:7

Introduction

Hearing the voice of God is the need of every child of God. It, however, requires some effort on the part of parents, guardians, teachers, among others. As we celebrate Children’s Day, our study focusses on the life of Samuel who serves as a role model to all children. As a boy Samuel heard the voice of God but did not recognise it until he was instructed by Eli. This was mainly because he was not familiar with God’s voice and thus could not link the voice he heard to Him. In this study, we shall examine the failures that led to this situation and provide a guide to help us avoid similar failures in our generation.

Questions for Discussion

1. What did Samuel do the first time God called him? Verses 4, 5

2. What was Eli’s response when Samuel ran to him? Verses 5, 6, 8

3. Why was Samuel unable to identify the voice of God? Verse 7

4. Whose responsibility is it to reveal the word of God to our children?

5. How would you apply lessons from today’s study?

Conclusion

Three times Samuel ran to Eli after hearing the voice of God because he was not yet familiar with the voice of the Lord. The Word of God, which then was His revealed nature and manifestations in His dealings with the Israelites had not yet been exposed to Samuel. Surprisingly, it had become characteristic of the Israelites not to teach their children about God. Thus a generation arose which did not know God or what He had done for Israel (Judges 2: 10). In like manner, the story will be the same for our generation if we assume that our children will definitely know God without an intentional effort to teach them about God. It is our responsibility to reveal the nature of God to our children through Bible stories, personal life testimonies and consistent family devotions. The prospects of Christianity in the next generation hinges on what we pour out into our children today.

COP 2018 BIBLE STUDY & HOME CELL WEEK 36

THE CHURCH OF PENTECOST – 2018 BIBLE STUDY OUTLINE

WEEK 36 – SUNDAY MORNING, SEPTEMBER 9, 2018.

TOPIC: THE TENETS OF THE CHURCH – REPENTANCE

Review of Previous Lesson (5 Minutes)

a. What did you learn from the previous lesson?

b. How did you apply it to your life?

Main Text: Luke 15:11-32

Memory Verse: I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent. – Luke 15:7

Introduction

In our study today, we shall explore the meaning of repentance and its implication to our lives as believers. The Standard Dictionary defines repentance as a sincere and thorough changing of the mind and disposition with regard to sin, involving a sense of personal guilt, helplessness and apprehension of God’s mercy. Repentance could also be said to be a strong desire to escape, or be saved from sin. The root meaning of repentance is a change of mind, heart and attitude and is applied particularly to sin and one’s relationship with God. It is a change of direction (moving away from sin and clinging to God). Repentance is essential so far as salvation is concerned and is therefore included in the Tenets of the Church of Pentecost, stated as we believe all men have to repent of and confess their sins before God.

Questions for Discussion

1. According to the passage, what was the request of the younger son? Verse 12

2. How did the younger son live his life? Verse 13-16

3. Why did the younger son come back? Verse 15-18

4. Explain the statement “when he came to his senses,” as indicated in verse 17

5. What was the father’s reaction when his son came back? Verses 22, 23, 24

Conclusion

The Hebrew word “Shuwb” translated “repent”, means “to turn back”, “to retreat”, and has the thought of turning and returning. From the passage, we see the younger brother telling his father to give him his share of the estate. After his request was granted, he set off for a distant country where he squandered his wealth in wild living. After he had wasted all the resources he began to suffer extreme hardship. When he came to his senses he realised that he had sinned against heaven and against his Father. As a result, he admitted that he was no longer worthy to be called a son. He then decided to return to his father to ask for forgiveness. When his father saw him from a far distance, he was filled with compassion for his son and welcomed him home. The reward of repentance is acceptance by God and a new relationship with Him.
