COP 2018 BIBLE STUDY & HOME CELL WEEK 39

THE CHURCH OF PENTECOST – 2018 BIBLE STUDY OUTLINE

WEEK 39 – SUNDAY MORNING, SEPTEMBER 30, 2018.

TOPIC: THE TENETS OF THE CHURCH – JUSTIFICATION

Review of Previous Week’s Lesson (5 Minutes)

a. What did you learn last week?

b. How did you apply it to your life?

Main Text: Romans 4:1-8

Memory Verse: Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. – Romans 5:1

Introduction

An important aspect of our conversion experience is Justification. To be justified means to be acquitted, pronounced ‘not guilty’ and declared righteous before the righteous God. Justification comes when one believes in the vicarious (done on behalf of another) death of Jesus Christ. When this happens, God credits the righteousness of Christ to the believer who then stands before God as if he has never sinned. Paul uses the example of Abraham to assert that this state is not acquired by works but by faith. Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness.

Questions for Discussion

1. What is Justification?

2. How does one get justified? Romans 5:1

3. Differentiate between justification by works and justification by faith. Romans 4:1-6

4. How is righteousness credited to the believer?

5. What lessons have you learnt from today’s study?

Conclusion

For the Jew, to be saved or accepted by God, one has to obey every minute detail of the Mosaic Law. The Jews therefore, had to work hard to obey all Jewish rules and regulations. Paul teaches that Abraham was justified in the sight of God by his faith in the promises of God, not by works. In the same way, God has given His Only Son to be crucified on a tree to atone for our sins. Whoever places his faith in the Son of God shall be justified.
