Memory Verse: I
tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in heaven over one

Introduction
In our study today, we
shall explore the meaning of repentance and its implication to our lives as
believers. The Standard Dictionary defines repentance as a sincere and
thorough changing of the mind and disposition with regard to sin, involving a
sense of personal guilt, helplessness and apprehension of God’s mercy. Repentance
could also be said to be a strong desire to escape, or be saved from sin. The
root meaning of repentance is a change of mind, heart and attitude and is
applied particularly to sin and one’s relationship with God. It is a change of
direction (moving away from sin and clinging to God). Repentance is essential
so far as salvation is concerned and is therefore included in the Tenets of the
Church of Pentecost, stated as we believe all men have to repent of and
confess their sins before God.
Questions for Discussion

passage, what was the request of the younger son? Verse 12

son come back? Verse 15-18
4. Explain the statement
“when he came to his senses,” as indicated in verse 17
5. What was the father’s

Conclusion
The Hebrew word “Shuwb”
translated “repent”, means “to turn back”, “to retreat”, and has the thought of
turning and returning. From the passage, we see the younger brother telling his
father to give him his share of the estate. After his request was granted, he
set off for a distant country where he squandered his wealth in wild living.
After he had wasted all the resources he began to suffer extreme hardship. When
he came to his senses he realised that he had sinned against heaven and against
his Father. As a result, he admitted that he was no longer worthy to be called
a son. He then decided to return to his father to ask for forgiveness. When his
father saw him from a far distance, he was filled with compassion for his son
and welcomed him home. The reward of repentance is acceptance by God and a new
relationship with Him.
