COP 2017 BIBLE STUDY & HOME CELL WEEK 44

THE CHURCH OF PENTECOST – 2017 BIBLE STUDY OUTLINE
WEEK 44 – SUNDAY MORNING, OCTOBER 29, 2017.

TOPIC: LOVE, THE NEW COMMANDMENT

Main Text: John 13:34-35
Memory Verse: A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another - John 13:34

Introduction

For many Christians, loving our neighbours as ourselves, (Matt 22:39), is a fairly manageable task. Our Master Jesus just before He died, ushered His followers into a new dimension of love. Here, it is no more about treating your neighbours as you would want them treat you, rather, it involves loving your neighbour as Christ would. Romans 5:8 states, “But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” This presents an interesting feature on the kind of love Christ has for the Church.

Questions for Discussion

1.      What was the new commandment Jesus gave to His disciples? How is that different from “love your neighbour as yourself”? Verse 34
2.      How do you understand, “one another”? Verse 34
3.      What is the standard of the love we should have for one another? Verse 34
4.      How would all men know that you are a disciple of Jesus Christ? Verse 35
5.      How has Jesus loved you? How can you demonstrate that love to others?

Conclusion

Love is action. No one can demonstrate the depths of true love more than what the Lord Jesus Christ has done for humanity. He set the example for believers to show love to one another and to the world by what He did. Loving others as we would have others love us is fairly easy. However, to love others as Christ did is a very challenging task; to continually show love to that sinning brother or sister, showing love to that family member who does not show us any form of respect and showing love to colleagues at work who openly dislike us is what Christ teaches. That is the kind of love our Saviour requires of us. Jesus fed the hungry, healed the sick, raised the dead, cast out demons and preached the Good News to people from whom He stood to gain nothing. We must follow in the footsteps of our Master.
