2014 FEBRUARY WEEK THREE LESSON

LESSON TWO

THE ORDINANCE OF WATER BAPTISM

MEMORY VERSE

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”  - Matthew 28: 20 (NIV)

We believe in the following two ordinances of the Church: Baptism by immersion and Holy Communion i.e. The Lord’s Supper. They were all instituted by Christ and are important to your new found faith. Lesson 2 will look at water baptism and Lord’s Supper would be discussed in a later lesson.

In this lesson we will seek to find out the following:

What is an ordinance (sacrament)?

Why do we celebrate two ordinances?

What is baptism and what is its place in my commitment to Christ and the church?

Ordinances/Sacraments are symbols that were incorporated into the life of the church by Jesus Christ himself; and who also personally participated in them during His earthly ministry. (Matt 28:19-20, Mark 16:16, Luke 22:19-20). Ordinance, is an outward sign of an inward work of grace (Acts 8:12; Rom 6:4-6).They are Baptism by immersion and the Lord’s Supper. The word baptism literally means submerge, immerse, purify, regenerate, sprinkle, cleanse.

We can identify at least three different forms of baptism in church practice but in the church of Pentecost, we subscribe to the Baptism by immersion because we follow the example of Jesus.

a.       What does Mark 1:9-11 say?

 ………………………………………………………………

Your participation in the sacraments is very important for your continued spiritual growth, because through the sacraments we unite as a church, receive grace from God and become witnesses of His love to the world. We participate in this sacrament in church, led by a qualified pastor or minister.

What is Water Baptism? Water baptism is an initiation ceremony and a public witness of the forgiveness of our sins. We affirm our death (old life) and life together with Christ (Romans 6:3-5). It is the means to become a member of the local church. This is a direct command from Jesus and must be obeyed.

Read Matthew 3:13-17.

Conclusion

God bless you for completing lesson 2, you are making a lot of progress. Reflect on these questions and do your best to provide answers to them, they will help to refresh your thoughts on what you have studied:

1.      What conviction did I receive after my baptism

2.      How have I understood Jesus’ method of baptism?

3.      After baptism what next?

4.      How can you put into practice what you learned?

5.      Would you encounter any obstacles incorporating these principles into your life? If yes, how could you overcome them with the help of the Lord and your discipler?

If you have not yet been baptized ask your mentor to introduce you to your presiding elder who will inform the district minister to baptize you. You need this great life changing experience.
