2014 APRIL WEEK ONE LESSON

LESSON SEVEN

THE ORDINANCE OF LORD'S SUPPER

MEMORY VERSE

For I received from the Lord what I passed on to you; The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, ‘This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me” 1 Corinthians 11: 23-24 (NIV)

Continuing from lesson 2 on sacraments/ordinances, this lesson will further help you to answer the following questions:

What is the Lord’s Supper?

What are some of the significant elements in the Lord’s Supper?

What is the importance of partaking in the Lord’s Supper?

Christ invites you (his child) to be an active participant in His sacraments!

The Lord’s Supper was instituted by the Lord Himself and it is a ceremony of communion and constant renewal for His disciples. Since its inception, the church of Jesus Christ has observed it to date. The Lord’s Supper can be celebrated as frequently as desired.

In the Church of Pentecost, it is observed at least once a month and in most cases on the first Sunday of each month. We can see some of the significant elements of the Lord’s Supper in the following passages:

a)      According to Matthew 26:26-28, what do the bread and the cup symbolize?

………………………………………………………………

b)      According to 1 Corinthians 11:26, when we take the elements of the Lord’s Supper, what are we doing? ………………………………………………………………

c)      Mark 14:24 points out that the cup, which symbolizes the blood of Christ shed on the cross, makes us participants in: ………………………………………………………………

The new covenant refers to a new relationship that we can now have with God through the death and resurrection of Christ, an intimate love relationship as children of God.

d)     What did Jesus do immediately after taking the bread and the cup, according to Luke 22:17-19?

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

e)      What future hope does Luke 22:18 give us in the Lord’s Supper?

………………………………………………………………

f)       In the same way as Luke 22:19, 1 Corinthians 11:24-25 urges us that when we celebrate the Lord’s Supper we do it in ………………………………………………………………

Participating in the Lord’s Supper in memory of Him is to realize that the Lord relives this experience with His disciples, making Himself present not in the elements, but in His church.

g)      Finally, what opportunity does the Lord’s Supper give for our spiritual growth as indicated in 1 Corinthians 11:28 and 31?

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

We encourage you to participate more actively in the Lord’s Supper every time it is celebrated.

CONDITIONS NECESSARY FOR ONE TO PARTAKE IN THE LORD’S SUPPER

The following conditions must be considered;

a.       Accept Jesus as  Lord and Saviour

b.      Receive baptism by immersion

c.       Right hand of fellowship should be extended

d.      Be a husband of one wife

e.       Should not be a second wife

f.       Should not be a suspended member

g.      Should be qualified by 1 Cor. 11:23-32

Conclusion

This study completes our discussions on sacraments or ordinances which was started in lesson 2. After treating Lord’s Supper try your hands on these questions which seeks to find out how you could practically apply the topic studied to real life situation. Do I really do what I am supposed to do after eating the Lord’s Supper?

1.      What prevents me from eating with the Lord at His table?

2.      If I cannot go to the Lord’s Table, how can I approach Christ in person at His second coming?

3.      How can you put into practice what you learned?

4.      Would you encounter any obstacles incorporating these principles into your life? If yes, how could you overcome them with the help of the Lord and your discipler?

2014 MARCH WEEK FOUR LESSON

LESSON SIX

WITNESS

MEMORY VERSE

And how can they preach unless they are sent? As it is written, ‘How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!’
Romans 10:15 (NIV)

This lesson will teach you that God has a wonderful plan for your life and that He wants to guide you step by step in fulfilling it. In this lesson, you will find answers to the following questions, which are common to everyone who has decided to follow Jesus:

What does God expect from me?

How do Christians serve God?

How can I help my family and friends to know Jesus?

Christ has a wonderful plan for your life!

“And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way; bearing fruit in every good work and growing in the knowledge of God”

(Colossians 1:10) NIV.

1. God created you for a Purpose

a.       What was God’s purpose in creating human beings, according to Genesis 1:26-28?

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Adam and Eve disobeyed God and separated themselves from the plan He had for their lives, which affected their descendants, including us. The Old Testament shows us a God that is seeking individuals and a people to live within His plan. This God sent Jesus Christ to guide people back to His original plan. Jesus illustrated this process in the parable of the sower.

2. God wants to be the Farmer of Your Life

Read Mark 4:1-20 and answer the following questions:

b.      What does the seed represent (verse 14)?

………………………………………………………………

c.       What prevents the plant from having roots (verses 15-16)?

………………………………………………………………

d.      What happens to the seed that does not fall on good soil (verses 15-19)?

………………………………………………………………

e.       When the seed falls on good soil, what happens (verse 20)?

………………………………………………………………

f.       What is your understanding of “bearing fruit”?

………………………………………………………………

g.      How much fruit do you think you can produce?

………………………………………………………………

3. God has given you a New Life to Bear Fruit.

The seed of the Word of God has been planted in your heart. It will start producing changes that are necessary, for your life to be more pleasing to God.

h.      According to Matthew 7:17, what fruit does Jesus expect from Christians?

………………………………………………………………

i.        In what ways can your friends and family know that you have become a new person in Christ?

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

4.     The Fruit that God wants to Produce in His Children is Eternal

Everything in this life has a limited existence, for example: building a house, planting a tree, writing a book, having a child, having a wonderful marital relationship, being good at art, sports or a profession, etc. The only one who offers you something that will not cease to exist after death is Jesus. The life that He gives you is eternal and now He wants to use you so that others would have the same eternal life. Read John 15:12-17 and answer the following questions:

a)      What is the great commandment that Jesus left for His followers (verse 12)?

………………………………………………………………

b)      What is the best way of showing love to our friends (verse 13)?

………………………………………………………………

c)      What example did Jesus give in relation to “giving life for others to have eternal life”?

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

d)     In verses 14 and 16 Jesus asks His followers to make an effort to bear fruit. One way of doing this is by sharing the eternal life they received with others. Is this optional or a commandment?

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

e)      What promise can be found in verse 16 for those who ask for the salvation of their friends?

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

f)       Write the names of some of your friends that need to know Jesus:

………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

You can help such people have eternal life in Jesus by doing the following things:

i.        Pray for them to desire to hear the Word of God.

ii.      Talk to them about what God has done in your life (Your previous lifestyle, how you got to know Christ, and what He means to you now).

iii.    Invite them to your small group meeting or to the local church, or set a date for them to come and listen to the gospel in your home.

Conclusion

You are really making spiritual advancement in your new walk with Christ. You have now learnt to share your salvation experience and the Word of God with others. There is no need to wait, go ahead and share your faith, you don’t need to know everything before you witness. You are certain of why God created you, and apart from bearing fruit of godly living you need to win others for Christ.

Finally, as you reflect on the above, answer these questions as they apply to the study in relation to your life;

1.      What does God expect from me?

2.      How can I help my family and friends to know Jesus?

3.      Which fruits am I producing? Do they please God?

4.      How can you put into practice what you learned?

5.      Would you encounter any obstacles incorporating these principles into your life? If yes, how could you overcome them with the help of the Lord and your discipler?

2014 MARCH WEEK THREE LESSON

LESSON FIVE
ESTABLISHING AN
EFFECTIVE QUIET TIME

Memory Verse

"Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got
up and went off to a solitary place, where He prayed." Mark 1:35

This lesson has been designed to help you develop the habit of communing with God on a daily basis. This habit called “Quiet Time” is the period of time one deliberately set aside to pray and commune alone with God and study the word of God. It is set aside by an individual child of God to speak with heavenly Father. It is an opportunity for every child to daily meet with His heavenly Father. Often times we read in the Bible that Jesus Christ went to a place solitarily to pray. He would go to a quiet, lonely place to pray and commune with God. He saw the need to daily go to the Father alone before encountering men. On some occasions He would even send His disciples away so that He could be left alone to have a quiet time to commune alone with God.

Many Christians enjoy corporate prayer, fellowship and Bible Study, but struggle to spend quality time alone with God daily. It is necessary to build a personal relationship with God and grow in intimacy with Him, because that was the way Jesus lived here on earth. A victorious Christian life is built on the foundation of constant quiet time where one spends quality time alone with God in prayer, meditation and studies. Enjoy the discussion below.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

1.    What is quiet time and is it relevant today?

2.    When did Jesus wake up to pray? Mark 1:35

3.    What did Jesus have to sacrifice to have a quiet time? Mark 1:35,36

4.    What benefit did Jesus derive from His quiet time? Mark 1:39

5.    What is the benefit of spending quality time with God? Psalm 91:1-2

6.    Why do many Christians forgo their quiet time?

7.    What happens to Christians who fail to do their quiet time? Matthew 17:15-16

8.    What practical steps will you take to maintain an effective quiet time?

Practically, quiet time involve the following;

a.   Select a time and a place that will be quiet and most able for you to be alone with God.

b.   Enter God’s presence with thanksgiving, praise and worship-Ps 100:1-5; Ps 103:1-5.

c.    Read a portion of scripture (it is better to follow a devotional plan). In the event of using a guide, please read the scripture thoroughly before reading the commentary.

d.   Meditate on the Word and let the Lord speak to you through His Word.

e.   Pray, making your requests known to God- 1 Tim 2:1-3. (Pray for yourself, family or dear ones, your Church, leaders in the nation and the Church, those who are vulnerable among others.)

f.     If you cannot read, you can get together with somebody who can read or meditate on the scriptures or sermons you have heard.

Spend quality time alone with the Lord and He would grant you fresh strength, grace, direction and anointing. Every other thing can be cancelled, but not Quiet Time. Make it a delight.

Conclusion
God desire that we fellowship with Him even as individuals. Men like Moses, Joshua, David and others communed with God consistently. They set out times daily and regularly to pray and receive instructions from the Lord, spending a “Quiet Time” in God’s presence. Women like Deborah and Anna did likewise. No wonder then that such men and women became great in God’s hand in their own times as they tapped the resources of heaven to meet the challenges facing them there on earth. The Lord Jesus Christ also made Himself an example to us in this respect that may follow in His steps.

Bible is an inspired book which is life and gives life; it is the WORD OF GOD.  It is infallible in its declaration, final in its authority, comprehensive and all – sufficient in its provisions. The Bible is divided into two parts: Old Testament which consist of 39 books and the New Testament consisting of 27 books. In all, there are sixty – six (66) books in the Bible.

A believer needs to spend time alone with God. As a new believer, it is the constant reading of the word (Bible) and prayer that can help you grow. To start the attitude of Bible studies, follow these steps:

a.       Set apart a time every day to nourish your life with the Word. This is commonly referred to as devotion.

b.      Read carefully for 15 to 25 minutes a selected portion of the Bible; you could start with the Gospel of Luke as a beginner.

c.       As you grow in the faith you will spend more time on the word running from several minutes into many hours.

d.      Meditate on how what you read relates with how you are living now. As you read, you will find promises from God for your life, commandments to obey, sins for which you should ask for forgiveness and teachings about what God expects from you.

e.       Pray according to what God has said to you through the Word. Do not forget the purposes of prayer that you studied in this lesson: worship, give thanks, pray for your needs and those of other people, confess your sins and ask for forgiveness.

Conclusion

You have completed another lesson and that shows that you are really making progress in your studies, your mentor and Christ of course should be proud of you! Remember that the Bible is the Word of God; it was written to you for your growth and maturity in Christ. As you read it, reflect on it and obey its commandments so that you will grow in the Lord. Try to reflect on these questions and find answers for them:

1.      What do I think about the word of God?

2.      What benefit would I gain from studying the Bible?

3.      What is the Bible to me?

4.      How can you put into practice what you learned?

5.      Would you encounter any obstacles incorporating these principles into your life? If yes, how could you overcome them with the help of the Lord and your discipler?
