2013 MAY WEEK TWO LESSON

STUDY 21

STUDY THE WORD

Main Text: Nehemiah 8:7-8; Acts 17:11

Memory Verse: 2 Tim. 2:15

Introduction

The word of God, as contained in the Bible, is the source from which true believers derive their strength. It commends itself by providing direction, hope, peace, and understanding to all who are spiritually enlightened and apply its message to their lives. Studying the bible gives us the opportunity to know God and His character. God is a personal God who wants to reveal himself to Christians. He does this mainly through His Word. Studying thus enables the Believer to know Him more and more.

Study Questions

  1.  What did the Levites do beyond reading the word to make the people understand? (Neh. 8:8)
  2. What does it mean to make the Scriptures clear and give it meaning? (Neh. 8:8)
  3. Why did the Bible describe the church in Berea as having a “more noble character than those in Thessalonica” (Acts 17:11) NIV
  4. What is the difference between reading the word and studying it?
  5. What lessons can we learn from both the Levites and the Bereans?
  6. How would these lessons benefit you as a disciple of Christ?

Conclusion

Studying the word helps you to understand the Bible better and retain as twice as you will retain in reading. It is said that if you hear the word, you can retain 10% of it, if you read; you retain 25% but if you study you will be able to retain as much as 50%. This makes studying very important if greater percentage of the word is to be retained. Studying also helps the believer to know the truth and remain faithful in the truth that concerns our salvation.
