2013 APRIL WEEK THREE LESSON

Study 19

The Word of God

Main Text: Heb. 4:12; John 1:1-5

Memory Verse: Romans 10:17

Introduction

You cannot really know God if you fail to know his word. It is in His word you will know who He is, what He likes or dislikes, His purpose concerning mankind and above all His love for humanity. The Word of God has very important significance for the Christian life. When we read the Word of God, we become familiar with what God is saying.

Study Questions:

  1. Describe the word of God according to Hebrews 4:12 (Read also Eph. 6:17b).
  2. How does the description of the Word of God apply to our everyday Christian life?
  3. What is the meaning of the phrase “it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart”? (Hebrews 4:12) NIV
  4. What is the role of the Word in creation? (John 1:3)
  5. To what extent does the Word of God help in creating new life in us? 2 Cor. 5:17

Conclusion:

Apostle Paul wrote that the hearing, reading, memorizing and meditating on God’s word helps in building our faith and the formation of Christ’s life in the Christian. We therefore cannot call ourselves Christians if we don’t feed on His word daily.

2013 APRIL WEEK TWO LESSON

Topic: Praise, A Powerful Weapon of Warfare 2

Main Text: 2 Chronicles 20: 1-28

Memory Verse:Psalm 34:1

Introduction

The Christian life is a battle to some extent, but thanks be to God, “the weapons of our warfare are powerful, they are mighty to the pulling down of strongholds”-2 Cor. 10:3-5. We have learnt that Praise and worship is one of the weapons in our warfare. When Christians begin to offer praise to God it produces an aroma that arises into the very throne of God. When we worship, we invite His presence into our situation and circumstance.

Study Questions

1.       In the main text, Jehoshaphat was faced with a terrible situation, what was it? 2 Chron. 20:2.

2.       What was the natural response of Jehoshaphat? 2 Chron. 20:3

3.      What did Jehoshaphat do in the face of the trouble? 2 Chron. 20:3

4.      What did the people do after the prophecy? 2 Chron. 20:18-19

5.      How did Jehoshaphat plan for the battle? 2 Chron. 20:21

6.      When the people began to praise and worship, what did the Lord do? 2 Chron. 20:22-24

7.      What lessons can you learn from Jehoshaphat and his people?

Conclusion

Jehoshaphat, like us, was faced with very terrible situation. He was afraid though, but he knew where to go for strength i.e. prayer. In his prayers the Lord gave him the battle plan, through praises. It does not sound proper to handle a physical war with praises but that was the direction of the Lord. Certainly, Jehoshaphat had victory through praise. When Christians are faced with challenging problems, we must remember, praise and worship is a powerful tool for victory.

2013 APRIL WEEK ONE LESSON

Study 17: Praise, A Powerful Weapon for Warfare 1

Main Text: Acts 16:22-31

Memory Verse: 2 Cor. 10:4

Introduction

The Christian is in a spiritual warfare with the Devil. The Devil uses many means for example, false doctrines, wrong thoughts and arguments (e.g. twisting the Word of God to make it doubtful as in the case of Adam & Eve-Gen. 3:1-4).  Sometimes the Devil incites people to physically attack the Christian as in the case of Paul and Silas. However, the Christian has powerful weapons that are able to demolish the strongholds of the Devil. One of these weapons is praise and worship. In this study, we will learn about how praise and worship can be used to overcome the activities of the Devil. Praise is an expression of thanks to God for what he has done in the form of songs and adoration. As the Christian sing to thank and praise God for what He has done, He does greater things.

Study Questions

1.       Why were Paul and Silas kept in Prison? Acts 16:17-19

2.       How were Paul and Silas kept in the Prison? Acts 16: 23-24

3.      What will be the natural attitude for people thrown into prison for no wrong done?

4.      At about midnight, what did Paul and Silas do? Acts 16:25

5.      Why were they praising God in that bad situation? What can you find to still praise God even in trouble?

6.      What were the result of the praises of Paul and Silas? Acts 16:26-30

7.      What lessons do you learn from the example of Paul and Silas?

Conclusion

Though Paul and Silas were put in prison for no wrong done, they still found a cause to give praise to God. They were not crying out for deliverance, they were not calling down fire to consume the place. They were simply praising God for suffering for the cause of the gospel. God was pleased with their attitude towards suffering and caused an earthquake that opened the gates of the prison leading to their deliverance. It even led to the salvation of the Jailer andhis household. Indeed, there is power in praise and so praise the Lord at all times.
