Main Text:
Galatians 2:5-10
Memory Verse: James, Peter and John, those reputed to be pillars, gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship when they recognised the grace given to me. – Galatians 2:9a

Introduction

The Right Hand of Fellowship is a practice in the Church of Pentecost (CoP) to officially welcome a member into fellowship and invite them to partake of the Lord’s Supper. Converts who have been baptized in water and have gone through the new converts’ class are given the right hand of fellowship. We shall discuss the significance of this practice and how we can make it effective in the local church.

Questions for Discussion

1. Who gave Barnabas and Paul the Right Hand of Fellowship? Verse 9
2. Why did the Church leaders give them the Right Hand of Fellowship? Verse 7-9
3. Which group of people are given the Right of Hand of Fellowship in the CoP?
4. Why are people given the Right Hand of Fellowship in the CoP?
5. How can we make this practice effective in the local church?

Conclusion

James, Peter and John who were the leaders of the church gave the Right Hand of Fellowship to Barnabas and Paul. By this, they publicly acknowledged them as fellow labourers who believed the gospel of Jesus Christ. It also signified an agreement to work together in furtherance of the gospel. In the CoP, new converts must be at least 13 years of age, baptized in water and have gone through the new converts’ class before the Right Hand of Fellowship can be extended to them. Giving the Right Hand of Fellowship to new converts demonstrates our acceptance of them as fellow bondservants of Christ who share a common faith. It is also a measure of ensuring that new converts go through the discipleship structures (Water baptism and new converts’ class) needful for their integration into the local church before partaking in the Lord’s Supper. Again, backsliders won back and suspended members who are reinstated are also given the right hand of fellowship.
