COP 2018 BIBLE STUDY & HOME CELL WEEK 21

THE CHURCH OF PENTECOST – 2018 BIBLE STUDY OUTLINE
WEEK 21 – SUNDAY MORNING, MAY 27, 2018.

TOPIC: RIGHT HAND OF FELLOWSHIP

Review of Previous Week’s Lesson (5 Minutes)
a. What did you learn last week?
b. How did you apply it to your life?

Main Text:
Galatians 2:5-10
Memory Verse: James, Peter and John, those reputed to be pillars, gave me and Barnabas the right hand of fellowship when they recognised the grace given to me. – Galatians 2:9a

Introduction

The Right Hand of Fellowship is a practice in the Church of Pentecost (CoP) to officially welcome a member into fellowship and invite them to partake of the Lord’s Supper. Converts who have been baptized in water and have gone through the new converts’ class are given the right hand of fellowship. We shall discuss the significance of this practice and how we can make it effective in the local church.

Questions for Discussion

1. Who gave Barnabas and Paul the Right Hand of Fellowship? Verse 9
2. Why did the Church leaders give them the Right Hand of Fellowship? Verse 7-9
3. Which group of people are given the Right of Hand of Fellowship in the CoP?
4. Why are people given the Right Hand of Fellowship in the CoP?
5. How can we make this practice effective in the local church?

Conclusion

James, Peter and John who were the leaders of the church gave the Right Hand of Fellowship to Barnabas and Paul. By this, they publicly acknowledged them as fellow labourers who believed the gospel of Jesus Christ. It also signified an agreement to work together in furtherance of the gospel. In the CoP, new converts must be at least 13 years of age, baptized in water and have gone through the new converts’ class before the Right Hand of Fellowship can be extended to them. Giving the Right Hand of Fellowship to new converts demonstrates our acceptance of them as fellow bondservants of Christ who share a common faith. It is also a measure of ensuring that new converts go through the discipleship structures (Water baptism and new converts’ class) needful for their integration into the local church before partaking in the Lord’s Supper. Again, backsliders won back and suspended members who are reinstated are also given the right hand of fellowship.

COP 2018 BIBLE STUDY & HOME CELL WEEK 20

THE CHURCH OF PENTECOST – 2018 BIBLE STUDY OUTLINE

WEEK 20 – SUNDAY MORNING, MAY 20, 2018.

TOPIC: EVANGELISM MINISTRY WEEK – INFLUENCING A NATION FOR GOD

Review of Previous Week’s Lesson (5 Minutes)
a. What did you learn last week?
b. How did you apply it to your life?

Main Text: 1 Samuel 7:3-15
Memory Verse: Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven. – Matthew 5:16 (NKJV)

Introduction

No believer needs a seminary training or theological education to cause a change in their nation. God gives everyone a sphere of influence on any scale He chooses to give. It is our duty to recognise the exact direction God wants us to take. God first calls us not to force others to be Christians, but to know Him and His plan for lost humanity. Then, He desires that through His spirit, we re-establish Christian principles of morality and ethics in our governments and raise the biblical standard of behaviour. Our study today focuses on how we, as disciples, can influence our nations through the Word and Prayer.

Questions for Discussion

1. What was Israel to do in order to be delivered from the Philistines? Verse 3
2. What key thing did the nation Israel realise they had done, on the day they fasted? Verse 6
3. What did Samuel do for the nation when they were seized with the terror of the Philistines? Verse 9
4. How can we influence our nations for God in this era?
5. Examine Samuel’s life in this lesson and share how you intend doing similarly for your nation.

Conclusion

The Word of God is living and active; sharper than any double-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12). At the critical time in 1 Samuel 7, Samuel used the power of the word in him to call his nation to repentance. The condition he set was: return to the LORD and forsake your gods. Truly, the people responded to Samuel’s call and forsook their sins. This encourages us to speak up to bring our nations to repentance when the need be. Calling them to repentance wasn’t enough. Samuel led Israel into a firmer commitment by calling the people to gather for prayer at Mizpah. As Samuel led the prayer, the people also confessed their sins verbally. God heard them and they defeated their enemies. Like Samuel, we can serve as agents of peace and influence our nation even in this dark world of sin.

COP 2018 BIBLE STUDY & HOME CELL WEEK 19

THE CHURCH OF PENTECOST – 2018 BIBLE STUDY OUTLINE
WEEK 19 – SUNDAY MORNING, MAY 13, 2018.

TOPIC: PUC DAY – EDUCATION IS PRICELESS

Review of Previous Lesson (5 Minutes)
a. What did you from the previous lesson?
b. How did you apply it to your life?

Main Text: Daniel 1:3-6
Memory Verse: And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and deed. – Acts 7:22

Introduction

It has been said that whatever the cost of education, the price is cheap compared to having an ignorant nation. The value of education, especially one provided in the right environment, is priceless and must be promoted. A nation cannot develop with unskilled labour force which is not abreast of modern technology. Sadly, our institutions of higher learning tasked to provide the kind of training needful for national development are either inadequate or under-resourced to fulfil their mandate. Thus, the Pentecost University College was inaugurated in 2003 to complement government’s effort in training the youth of this country for future roles in the national economy. The vision is to empower them to serve with integrity and the fear of God; a noble cause as this requires the support of all in the church.

Questions for Discussion

1. What was the king’s order to Asphenaz? Verses 3, 4
2. How were they going to train the youth? Verses 4, 5
3. What role is the church playing in training the youth of this country?
4. How can we help the church to fulfil this role effectively?
5. What have you learnt from today’s study?

Conclusion

Nebuchadnezzar’s focus was not only on articles of gold and silver when he conquered Israel. He quickly ordered his servants to identify capable youth who could be trained to serve in his palace. These youth later became governors in the land of Babylon (Dan. 3:12). A nation’s wealth is not limited to its natural resources only. Thus, even with abundant natural resources, development is not achievable without a skilled and well trained labour force. Due to inadequate facilities for higher learning, a significant number of youth are denied the opportunity for training, thereby wasting their productive years. To salvage this situation, the church is complementing the efforts of government by training the youth in the Pentecost University College. This venture involves very huge capital expenditure which requires the support of the church. When we give towards this cause, the school will be resourced to provide quality training for all who attend. Education is a priceless heritage we can all have or bestow on others. Let us do all we can to support and promote it in the best environment.

WEEK 19 – SUNDAY EVENING, MAY 13, 2018.

TOPIC: THE HUMAN HEART IS THE SOURCE OF ALL SINS

Review of Previous Lesson (5 Minutes)
a. What did you learn from the previous lesson?
b. How did you apply it to your life?

Main Text: Matthew 15:10-20
Memory Verse: The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it? – Jeremiah 17:9 (ESV)

Introduction

The disciples of Jesus did not wash their hands before eating and this offended some of the Pharisees and Teachers of the Law. To them, “to be clean and holy” was to wash one’s self with water as stated in the tradition handed over to them by the elders of their community. These men came to Jesus to query Him because His disciples failed to wash as tradition required of them. Jesus replied that, holiness or cleanliness is not primarily determined by the outward appearance of a person but by the state of their hearts. In our study today we will look at what Jesus says about the human heart and the commission of sin and what makes a person clean or holy before God.

Questions for Discussion

1. How did Jesus describe the Pharisees? Verse 14
2. Why do you think the Pharisees were offended by the response Jesus gave them?
3. What was Jesus’ view about what makes a man unclean? Verse 17-20
4. What is the solution to the evil state of human hearts? Ezekiel 36:25-27; John 3:3-5
5. What have you learnt today?

Conclusion

Jesus called the Pharisees “blind guides” because of their emphasis on outward rituals rather than the state of the heart. This offended them so much because they felt Jesus was breaking the tradition of their elders, which emphasised outward washing rather than washing of the depraved heart. Jesus made it clear that to be unclean is to have an evil or depraved heart. The only way the human heart can be made clean is when one experiences regeneration by accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and personal Saviour.
