THE CHURCH OF PENTECOST – 2018 BIBLE STUDY OUTLINE
WEEK 12 – SUNDAY MORNING, MARCH 25, 2018.

TOPIC: OFFICERS’ APPRECIATION DAY – HONOUR OFFICERS OF THE CHURCH

Review of Previous Week’s Lesson (5 Minutes)
a. What did you learn last week?
b. How did you apply it to your life?

Main Text: Philippians 2: 24-30
Memory Verse: Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you. – 1 Thessalonians 5:12

Introduction

Lay Leaders (Officers of the Church of Pentecost) are not paid by the church. Their dedicated service to God and the church enables more people to be reached and also makes discipleship and pastoral care effective. In view of this, the church has instituted the officers’ appreciation day to highlight their contribution and encourage members to show appreciation to them. This must be embraced with a good heart by every member of the church.

Questions for Discussion

1. Who was Epaphroditus and what was his role in the church in Philippi? verse 25-27
2. What happened to him? verse 30
3. Discuss the statement ‘welcome him in the Lord with great joy, and honour people like him’ in verse 29.
4. In what ways can we honour officers in our local church?
5. What have you learnt from today’s study?

Conclusion

Paul described Epaphroditus as a brother, fellow worker, fellow soldier, and a messenger of the church in Philippi. He risked his life for the work of Christ while Paul was under house arrest in Rome. Many officers make significant sacrifices for the progress of the church. Being custodians of the local church, they receive ministers and complement their efforts both in administration and discipleship. They also minister to the needs of members. As Paul instructed the Philippians, people who render such selfless service are worthy of appreciation and honour. Appreciation and honour can be expressed through visitation, giving of gifts, and respect for authority. We must also learn to say “thank you” when an officer extends a hand of help and also forgive them when they offend us.

TOPIC: EASTER – TETELESTAI!

Review of Previous Week’s Lesson (5 Minutes)
a. What did you learn last week?
b. How did you apply it to your life?

Main Text:
John 19:28-37
Memory Verse: When he had received the drink, Jesus said “It is finished”. With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. – John 19:30

Introduction

The Greek word Tetelestai can be translated “Paid in full” or “It is finished”. It is thought to be the greatest word from the Greatest Man on the greatest day for all eternity. The Cross showcases the redemptive work of Christ. The atonement and propitiation were made once and for all by the one offering made in Jesus’ body on the Cross (Heb. 10:10). Christians from all walks of life must fully appropriate the finished work of Christ in their daily living. Easter offers believers the opportunity to reflect on this sacrifice. It also gives them the opportunity to speak to others about the atoning death of Jesus Christ. We must tell our friends, colleagues and family members who have not yet come to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ about the reason for Easter.

Questions for Discussion

1. Why did Jesus request for water? Verse 28
2. Which drink was given to Jesus? Verse 29
3. What were Jesus’ last words on the Cross? Verse 30
4. What does the statement “It is finished” mean?
5. How can believers ensure that others also get to know about the finished work of Jesus Christ?

Conclusion

The foundation of the gospel is the Cross. The entire purpose of Jesus’ earthly ministry culminates in His death and resurrection. It is therefore not surprising that Jesus never said “it is finished” until He got to the Cross. This, however, does not mean we should relent in our tasks as believers to lead lives worthy of emulation. It rather places on us the responsibility to live holy lives. This season should also remind us of the need to tell the world about the finished work of Christ and reconcile with others, just as Jesus reconciled humanity with God.

WEEK 11 – SUNDAY EVENING, MARCH 18, 2018.

TOPIC: PRAYER – KEY TO A VICTORIOUS CHRISTIAN LIVING

Review of Previous Week’s Lesson (5 Minutes)
a. What did you learn last week?
b. How did you apply it to your life?

Main Text: Luke 11:1-13
Memory Verse: Pray without ceasing. – 1 Thessalonians 5:17

Introduction

Prayer is an essential Christian tool. It is considered a discipline for victorious Christian living. Jesus’ teaching on prayer focuses on God and should never be misconstrued as a showcase. The prayer guideline Jesus gives shows how direct we need to be in our prayers. Our prayers should not necessarily be in an imitated prayer voice, elegant words or movements in order to be heard by God. For, it is the effectual fervent prayer of the righteous that avails much. Our study today focuses on the guidelines Jesus gives on prayer.

Questions for Discussion

1. What was Jesus doing when His disciples approached Him? Verse 1
2. What did the disciples request of Jesus? Verse 1
3. How do you understand the model prayer Jesus outlined? Verse 2-4
4. Why should believers be persistent in prayers? Verse 8
5. What are some of the challenges to having an effective prayer life as believers?

Conclusion

Jesus did not only teach about prayer but He prayed. Prayer is indeed the key to unlocking spiritual doors. We can pray for our own needs, but it must not end there. We are to be intercessors. We pray “give us...” Here we ask for the Father’s provision for family, friends and even foes. We also pray for forgiveness from God and receive empowerment to forgive others. The demands of the modern society make it difficult for believers to make time for personal and corporate prayers. Just as the disciples met Jesus praying, prayer should be part of our daily lives as believers. Surely, Jesus did not only teach about prayer, He prayed.

WEEK 10 – SUNDAY MORNING, MARCH 11, 2018.

TOPIC: McKEOWN MISSIONS WEEK – CONTRIBUTE TO THE WORK OF MISSIONS

Review of Previous Lesson (5 Minutes)
a     What did you learn from the previous lesson?
b.      How did you apply it to your life?

Main Text: Revelations 7: 9-12
Memory Verse: And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. – Matthew 24:14

Introduction
The McKeown missions week is celebrated in the Church of Pentecost to highlight the activities of missions in the church in order to guide intercession and also raise funds in support of the work. In a circular letter on Missions week dated April 7, 1993, the then Chairman of the church, the late Prophet M. K. Yeboah stated that “the indicators flash out the signal, ‘the Lord’s coming is near’ and we must strain every nerve, invest the last pesewa, for this gospel of the kingdom to be preached throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations…” The urgency of the need to reach all people groups with the gospel requires the support of everyone in the church.

Questions for Discussion
1.     Describe the composition of the multitude before the throne. verse 9
2.      What was the multitude doing before the throne? verse 10
3.      What is God’s ultimate purpose for mankind? (1 Tim. 2: 3-4)
4.      How can all nations, tribes and languages be represented at the throne?
5.      What has been your personal contribution to this?

Conclusion
God has a plan for mankind. This is to redeem mankind from the consequences of the fall of man in the Garden of Eden. Ultimately, this plan will climax in the gathering of people of every tongue before God for a life of eternity (Rev 7: 9-12). However, there still remains a significant number of people groups who have not yet heard the gospel. Thus, every member of the church is being called upon to do three main things for the church’s missions effort: pray every day for the success of missions, give generously toward missions effort, and evangelise and bring souls to Christ. We cannot do one and abandon the others. We are to do all three, Pray, Give and Evangelise (PGE). Let this be your slogan throughout the McKeown week.

TOPIC: THE GREAT COMMISSION: GO PREACH

Review of Previous Lesson (5 Minutes)
a.       What did you learn from the previous lesson?
b.      How did you apply it to your life?

Main Text: Matthew 4:13-25
Memory Verse: From that time on Jesus began to preach, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near. – Matthew 4:17

Introduction
Evangelism is one of the most important businesses in the sight of God. It has always been one of His avenues for delivering people from the bondage of Satan. Jesus Christ was so determined that every single person would hear the Gospel (good news). He was the Light shining in darkness and the focus of His preaching was the Kingdom of Heaven. He taught people to change their minds; He preached to get them heavenly minded, and healed them to make them whole. He also called people and discipled them to reach out to others who were lost. This is the main duty of every believer.

Questions for Discussion
1.    What was the message of Jesus when He moved residence from Nazareth to Capernaum? Verse 17
2.    What method did Jesus use to spread the gospel? Verses 18,19,23
3.    How do we obey the command to spread the gospel?
4.    How often should signs and wonders follow the preaching of the gospel? Mark 16:17; Acts 8:37- 40; Acts 14:3

Conclusion
The duty of human beings is to do the will of God and to finish it. It has been said that it matters to God what we preach and how we preach it. Nobody has the right to preach anything and anyhow. We are supposed to preach the Good News with power, passion and precision. If this is done in the name of the Lord, then miracles, signs and wonders shall follow our preaching. May the Lord do with us what He desires as we decide to follow Him.
